samra is a community for women finding their way to the water.

The name samra is an Arabic word used to describe a woman with darker skin. Across many cultures, women are often encouraged to stay out of the sun, avoid getting darker, and take up less space outdoors. We chose the name samra to reclaim it. It’s a celebration of women who choose visibility, freedom, and connection to the natural world on their own terms.

we are samra

We met in Lombok, Indonesia. Though we come from different cultural backgrounds, Arab-Persian and African American, we shared a love for the ocean and surfing, and an understanding of navigating spaces where we did not always see ourselves reflected. In different ways, we are both samra.

samra began with a shared desire to create the kind of community we had been searching for ourselves. A space where women can build confidence in the water, form meaningful friendships, express themselves creatively, and deepen their relationship with the ocean through surfing and shared experiences.

Our first gathering and retreat will take place in Lombok in late 2026. Join us as we begin.
